The aging face loses definition of eyelid, lashes, and brow features, because natural color fades as the lashes and brow cilia become sparse and gray (lose pigment). Makeup restores definition, but is sometimes difficult to apply with accuracy and symmetry. Micropigmentation is an alternative that eliminates the effort of application, stays in place while swimming or perspiring, and minimizes morning preparation time. Micropigmentation is great for those who are active in sports, for those who have difficulty seeing to apply makeup, and for those with arthritis or other problems making application of eyeliner difficult – but even for those who just want to wake up with their “makeup” on! The pigments are tested for safety.
We use a topical anesthetic applied to the eyelids, which numbs the lids for comfort during the procedure. A hand applicator technique places the pigment accurately along the lashes. The width and extent of the application is guided by your preference. I examine the eyelids at 4-6 weeks to check the pigment take and apply touch-up if needed. If you desire more width of the eyeliner or more extension at the lateral corner, this may be done at the follow-up visit. The goal is to have enough pigment application to avoid having to use makeup – although you may add makeup over the micropigmentation for special occasions when you might want a more heavily made-up look. Post-procedure care involves application of Vaseline to keep the eyelid margins moist, and oral antiinflammatory medication or Tylenol. There is minimal swelling and tenderness, and no down time.
When the brows fade and become thin, addition of micropigmentation enhances the eyebrows giving a youthful appearance. We individualize the color to blend with your natural hair and brow color, as well as listen to your personal preferences so that the outcome is natural. Your brow cilia provide a textured appearance and are a guideline for application of the pigment. Be sure to wear your makeup when you come in for the procedure for accuracy of measurements and color assessment. The goal is a feathered, natural appearance. At the follow-up visit, we check for the color take and touch-up if you would like revisions.
Micropigmentation of the lips restores the outline and color of the lips to provide definition lost with aging. Application of color is not the same as selecting lipstick color. Natural color tones restore the individuals coloring as closely as possible. When applied, the color often appears darker and more intense than desired for approximately 4 weeks. As it fades to the final appearance, it gives back the definition lost with aging. You can apply lipstick over the micropigmentation if you desire a different color variation.
What to expect:
We apply a topical anesthetic to treatment area, and in addition, offer an optional sedative prescription. Topical anesthetic applied to the skin provides comfort throughout the procedure. I apply the pigment with a hand-applicator under magnification for accurate placement. If you decide to take an oral sedative, please have a friend or family member provide transportation for your safety.
After the procedure, you may resume your usual activities. In the first few hours after the procedure, you notice that the pigment appears very dark and intense because the outer layer has oxydized. The pigment fades over 4-6 weeks to the desired color. We encourage follow-up at 4-6 weeks from the date of the procedure and as needed so that we may check your appearance after the pigment has had time to settle. At that time, I check the pigment for color and smoothness, and if desired additional pigment is added. We suggest that our clients achieve the look they desire – making additional overlay of traditional makeup unnecessary. However, if a heavier makeup look is desired, you may add makeup.
